A 32-year-old man in China has sparked widespread online discussion after marrying a woman just three days after a brief video call, only to regret the decision less than two weeks later.
The man, surnamed Gu, is from Zhejiang province in eastern China. As an only child, he said he felt strong pressure from his parents to get married. Hoping to find a partner quickly, he paid 200 yuan to register with a local matchmaking agency.
At first, the agency introduced him to three local women, but none of them showed interest. The matchmaker then suggested women from other provinces and claimed that a marriage could be arranged within two days.
In April, Gu was introduced to a 30-year-old woman from Shaanxi province in northwestern China. Her profile stated that she had no debts, no criminal record, and no serious illness or genetic condition. It also said she was willing to enter a “flash marriage” and relocate far from home.
The two only had a five-minute video call before the marriage was arranged. Gu asked her about her work and family background, but most of the conversation was handled by the matchmaker. The agency also promised to provide her credit report and premarital medical examination before the wedding.
Despite never meeting her in person, Gu and his family agreed to proceed. They reportedly spent a total of 265,000 yuan, including a 100,000-yuan bride price and a 160,000-yuan matchmaking fee. The matchmaker then accompanied the woman to Gu’s city.
Three days later, the couple officially registered their marriage. However, Gu’s family had still not met the woman’s parents.
After the registration, the matchmaker failed to provide the promised documents. Gu later took his new wife to a bank to check her credit history and discovered that she had around 100,000 yuan in debt. The woman claimed the debt belonged to her ex-boyfriend and had nothing to do with her.
Gu also noticed that the verified name on her mobile payment account was different from the name he knew. Shortly afterward, she told him that she had high liver enzyme levels and needed to lose weight, though she said the condition would not affect her ability to have children.
Just nine days after the marriage, Gu said he regretted the decision and asked for a divorce. The woman initially agreed but later changed her position and filed for divorce herself.
She claimed that Gu’s request for divorce caused her emotional distress and said she had been diagnosed with depression. She also demanded 50,000 yuan in compensation, alleging that Gu had asked her to wear make-up, do housework, and find a job.
Gu has also taken legal action against the matchmaking agency, demanding a refund of the 160,000-yuan service fee. The agency refused, arguing that it had successfully introduced the woman he married. It also suggested that the couple may have staged a fake divorce in order to recover the money.
The case has triggered heated debate online, with many people criticising the couple’s rushed decision.
One commenter said that treating marriage casually would eventually lead to serious consequences. Another said marriage is one of life’s biggest decisions and should never be made after only a few days. A third compared the case to an unbelievable short drama plot.
