The fatal incident took place on June 13 at Ponte do Esqueleto, also known as Skeleton Bridge, an abandoned bridge spanning Limeira and Cordeirópolis in São Paulo state. The victim, identified as Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas, was a young physical education teacher who had come to experience the popular rope-jumping extreme activity.

Witness footage and police investigations revealed the chilling sequence of negligence. Two professional instructors lifted the woman in a classic airplane-style launch, hoisting her onto their shoulders before hurling her off the bridge. In a fatal procedural failure, the staff completely forgot to fasten her safety cord and protective harness, leaving her with zero protection for the high-altitude jump.

The young woman had no idea she was unsecured before being launched. She screamed “rope!” at the last second in a desperate plea, but it was too late. She plunged directly from the 40-meter height and suffered fatal multiple traumatic injuries on impact, dying instantly at the scene. Her fiancé witnessed the entire deadly accident, enduring the devastating loss of his partner.

The adventure company Entre Cordas, which organized the recreational extreme sport activity, has faced severe legal repercussions following the tragedy. Brazilian police immediately detained six staff members involved in the incident, including the two instructors who conducted the launch, launching a full criminal investigation into gross negligence, safety protocol violations and potential manslaughter charges.

Local authorities pointed out that routine safety checks were completely skipped before the jump. Standard operating procedures require staff to double-check harness fastening, rope connection and protective equipment before every launch. The extreme lapse of safety awareness directly led to the avoidable death.

The viral tragedy has triggered heated public discussions over the unregulated safety risks of informal extreme sport venues in Brazil. Many netizens called for stricter industry supervision, mandatory staff qualification audits and standardized safety inspection mechanisms for high-altitude adventure projects. As the investigation proceeds, the case stands as a sobering warning of how trivial human negligence can result in irreversible fatal consequences in extreme sports.
