The untimely death of a celebrity cat in China due to a medical mishap has led its owner, a pet influencer with five million online followers, to fight tirelessly for justice. The tragic incident has sparked widespread public outrage and prompted the involved pet hospital to offer compensation and take corrective actions.
The feline’s owner, Deng Feng, is a Shenzhen-based cattery operator and pet influencer with 5 million social media followers. He breeds rare-coloured British Longhair and Shorthair cats, and his cattery, GoldenTales, has produced world-champion felines since 2017. In 2024, Deng also donated three million yuan (US$440,000) to a fund for rescuing stray cats, highlighting his deep love for animals.
The deceased cat, Kuankuan, was a female blue golden shaded kitten— the progeny of two champion cats, prized for her exceptional pedigree. Her sweet features, naturally lined eyes, and golden coat even earned her the nickname “the Liu Yifei of the cat world,” a reference to a famous Chinese actress known for her beauty.
In March, Deng posted a video revealing that Kuankuan had died at a pet hospital at just five months old—a tragic end for a healthy kitten who was only taken in for a minor nasal tear duct blockage, a treatment that required only light sedation. However, the hospital unilaterally switched to general anaesthesia without notifying Deng, a critical mistake that led to her death.
During the procedure, doctors failed to provide oxygen or connect monitoring equipment, which resulted in Kuankuan suffering respiratory and cardiac arrest. She died after receiving no timely resuscitation, turning a routine treatment into a fatal tragedy.
“She was lively and playful when I took her out, but when we returned home, she was in a small urn,” Deng said, his grief palpable. He stressed that the treatment was very simple and did not require anaesthesia at all. “Kuankuan was a healthy girl. Without this medical accident, she could have lived a very happy life. Even during the anaesthesia injection, she was still happily kneading,” he added, recalling the last moments with his beloved kitten. Deng also noted that he had trusted the hospital for years, making the betrayal even more painful.
After Kuankuan’s death, Deng demanded that the hospital review the procedure, issue a public apology, reform surgical protocols, and pay 300,000 yuan (US$44,000) in compensation. However, the hospital repeatedly dismissed these requests as “beyond reasonable capability.” When negotiations broke down, Deng’s lawyer filed a lawsuit to seek justice for Kuankuan.
The hospital’s indifferent response sparked widespread outrage online, with netizens expressing their sorrow and anger over Kuankuan’s unnecessary death. “Kuankuan’s brief life ended on a cold operating table. She never even saw spring,” one netizen wrote. Another commented: “The doctors are not saving lives, they are taking them. Kuankuan’s worth, both commercial and personal, cannot be measured in money or apologies.”
On April 6, facing mounting public pressure and legal action, the hospital finally announced its response: it would compensate Deng with 300,000 yuan, provide free sterilisation surgery for 1,100 stray cats, close for 15 days for rectification, and dismiss the involved vet—who also served as the hospital’s director.
Deng said that after weeks of fighting for justice, the case had finally reached a conclusion, but the victory felt hollow. “But my Kuankuan is already dead. I will never be the winner,” he wrote. In a touching gesture, Deng added that he would donate the entire 300,000 yuan compensation to establish a legal aid fund, helping other pet owners seek justice when their animals die due to anaesthesia accidents.
