Did you know that finding a bird nest

outside your home is a sign of good fortune in China?

At our Beijing campus, it all started

with one 斑鸠 (bānjiū) - turtledove - and her nest.

Then came two eggs.

Then - two little birds 💛

In China, this is a symbol of good fortune

Animals are believed to be

sensitive to their surroundings.

So if a bird chooses to build a nest near your home, it represents all the good things - safety, trust, positive energy.

In other words, it's seen as a place

of harmony and good vibes 💛

  • 斑鸠 (bānjiū)  turtledove
  • 鸟 (niǎo)  bird
  • 鸟巢 (niǎocháo)  bird's nest

  • 鸟蛋 (niǎodàn)  bird egg
  • 小鸟 (xiǎo niǎo)  baby bird / little bird
  • 孵化 (fūhuà)  to hatch

There is also a deeper layer of meaning.

The arrival of new life -

especially in pairs, like these two baby birds -

can symbolize growth and happy developments

on the horizon.

It can be a gentle reminder

that something good is unfolding,

even in the background of everyday life.

  • 幸运 (xìngyùn) • good luck / fortune
  • 吉祥 (jíxiáng)  auspicious
  • 平安 (píng'ān)  peace, safety
  • 成长 (chéngzhǎng)  growth

Isn't it moments like this that connect learning with real life?

What a chance to experience firsthand the culture, the beliefs, and the stories that shape how Chinese people see the world

We can’t wait to organize more exciting activities and cultural adventures — see you at the next one! 🇨🇳
