Police in Shanghai’s Pudong New Area handled an incident where a tourist assaulted another visitor after being dissuaded from smoking inside the Shanghai Disney Resort, according to a police statement released on Monday. The smoker has since apologized to the victim, provided compensation, and the two parties have reached a mediated settlement.
According to the police statement, officers in Pudong New Area received an emergency call at around 5:45 pm on Sunday, reporting a physical altercation at the entrance of a restaurant on Shendi West Road. Law enforcement personnel promptly arrived at the scene to handle the incident.
The Global Times confirmed via Amap, a popular Chinese map service, that Shendi West Road is located within the Shanghai Disney Resort, placing the altercation within the resort’s premises.
The incident unfolded when a 34-year-old visitor surnamed Xu was smoking in an outdoor area of a restaurant inside the resort. A 24-year-old man surnamed Zhang stepped forward to dissuade Xu from smoking. Perceiving Zhang’s words as overly harsh, Xu physically attacked Zhang, the police statement detailed.
Subsequent medical examinations confirmed that Zhang suffered soft tissue bruises but no severe injuries, the statement added.
Since both parties expressed a willingness to resolve the dispute through mediation, the local police conducted legally sanctioned conciliation. Xu has formally apologized to Zhang, provided compensation, and the two sides have signed a mediation agreement to settle the matter, according to the police statement.
The incident comes amid strengthened tobacco control measures at the Shanghai Disney Resort, which have been in place since May 29, 2025, The Paper reported on Monday. As clearly stipulated in the resort’s guest guidelines, smoking—including the use of e-cigarettes and other smoke-emitting products—is prohibited across the entire resort and Disney Town, with the exception of designated smoking zones.
The guidelines further specify that visitors may only smoke in areas clearly marked with “Designated Smoking Area” signs within the resort, ensuring compliance with public health and safety regulations.
