A Chinese woman who attempted to copy a recently viral lamp post climbing challenge ended up getting herself stuck and had to call the police for rescue. The incident, which highlights the risks of blindly following internet trends, has sparked discussions online about the absurdity of some viral challenges.

The woman, surnamed Song, is from Jiangsu province in eastern China. She was out for an after-dinner walk when she decided to take on the popular challenge, which has been circulating widely on mainland social media.

The self-rescue challenge requires participants to cross their legs around a lamp post, remain in a sitting position, and then try to free themselves. While this may sound simple enough, many people have been shocked to discover that they cannot uncross their legs once they are wrapped around the pole tightly.

The challenge has often descended into farce, with many people forced to seek help from family members, passers-by, food delivery riders, and even the police to extricate themselves from the awkward and potentially dangerous situation.

In Song’s case, the more she struggled to free herself from the lamp post, the more tightly stuck she became. Panicked, she had no choice but to call the police for assistance. When officers arrived, they first comforted her to calm her down, then carefully adjusted her position before helping her uncross her legs.

Luckily, Song suffered only numbness in her legs and no serious injuries from the incident.

Videos circulating on mainland social media show some people successfully completing the challenge. Successful participants typically slowly rotate their bodies around the lamp post to find the right angle to free one leg from the other, avoiding the struggle that often leads to getting stuck.

The police officer who helped rescue Song warned that the challenge carries hidden safety risks. “The knee joints need to be extremely flexible and able to bear the weight of the entire body, which can easily cause injuries,” he explained. He also noted that the continuous compression of blood vessels in the lower limbs can lead to numbness, swelling, and even tissue death in severe cases.

The officer urged people not to put themselves in unnecessary danger by participating in such risky challenges.

His warning resonated with many netizens on social media. “Many such challenges become popular online just to grab attention. Why do people blindly follow them without thinking about the risks?” one netizen commented.

However, some netizens expressed a competitive urge after hearing about the incident. One person said she wanted to “give it a try” herself, while another commented: “The mentality of wanting to be better than the people who got stuck in the videos is one of the reasons why people attempt such stupid challenges.”

Such risky and absurd challenges often go viral on mainland social media. Previous viral challenges have included tying ankles with zip ties, squeezing into a deep bucket, and wrapping oneself in several layers of winter quilts—all of which carry potential safety hazards.
