French national Chan Tao Fumi has been executed in Guangzhou, southern China, after being sentenced to death in 2010 for drug trafficking, according to France's Foreign Ministry, as reported by AFP.

The 62-year-old, who was born in Laos and held French citizenship, was executed despite what French authorities described as ongoing diplomatic efforts to obtain clemency on humanitarian grounds.

Chan was first arrested in 2005 and initially sentenced to life imprisonment. However, following the emergence of new evidence, his case was reopened, and he was retried. A court in Guangzhou later convicted him of involvement in the production, transport, smuggling, and trafficking of methamphetamine.

Authorities stated that the case was connected to a broader criminal network allegedly engaged in large-scale synthetic drug production between 1999 and 2003.
