At 36, an American man built a life in China that he never expected. What began as a simple teaching opportunity became a life-changing decision that gave him a family, financial stability, and a new idea of what success really means.
He grew up moving around the United States, living in several different states and never staying in one place long enough to truly feel at home. In 2016, at the age of 27, he accepted a job teaching English in Shenzhen, China.
It was his first time leaving the U.S., and he even sold his car to buy the plane ticket. At the time, he had no idea that this move would completely change the direction of his life.
While living in China, he met his future wife, who has Chinese roots and was working as a French teacher.
Their relationship grew, and eventually they started a family together. During the pandemic, they temporarily moved to Tahiti to be closer to her family. But after several years away, they realized that China still felt like home. In 2025, they returned to Shenzhen with their two children.
One of the biggest reasons he values life in China is the lower cost of living compared with the United States.
He previously worked as an English teacher earning around $4,000 per month. His family rents a three-bedroom apartment for about $1,000 per month.
Their internet costs around $29, electricity is about $100, healthcare is roughly $90, and groceries for a family of four cost about $100 per month. Eating out is also affordable, with many family meals costing less than $10 in total.
For him, the difference is significant.
He says his monthly expenses in China are only about a quarter of what he used to spend in the U.S., even when he was living alone.
This gives his family more breathing room and allows them to enjoy a comfortable lifestyle without the same financial pressure.
Shenzhen also gives him the feeling of living in the future.
The city is modern, fast-moving, and full of technology.
Food can be delivered by drones, self-driving taxis are becoming part of daily life, and the public transportation system is efficient and inexpensive. The subway reaches many parts of the city, and daily payments are mostly done through mobile apps, QR codes, or biometric systems. For him, daily life feels convenient, advanced, and easy to manage.
His career has also changed since returning to China.
After sharing videos online about his life there, he gained attention on social media, which opened new opportunities.
He later moved into a marketing manager role, earning around $3,500 per month, while also making extra income from side projects.
Although the job pays slightly less than teaching, it gives him more flexibility and time to work on other interests.
Another major reason he appreciates Shenzhen is the family-friendly environment. The city has many parks, indoor play areas, and activities for children.
He feels safe raising his kids there and does not feel the same worries he might have had elsewhere.
His children are also growing up with three languages: English with him, French with their mother, and Mandarin at school. Their public kindergarten is affordable, costing around $300 per semester for both children, including meals.
For many people, the American Dream means building success inside the United States.
But for him, that dream looks different.
It means having a safe place to raise his children, lower living costs, flexible work, modern convenience, and a better quality of life.
His story shows that success does not always follow the path people expect.
Sometimes, the life someone is searching for can be found far from where they started.
