On March 25, during a regular press conference held by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, a reporter from Nippon TV raised a question regarding reports that two Japanese citizens were arrested in Guangzhou this January for drug possession.

In response to the inquiry, spokesperson Lin Jian stated, "I am not aware of the situation you mentioned."
Earlier that same day, Nippon TV had reported on the situation citing sources involved in China-Japan relations.
According to Kyodo News, the two Japanese nationals were detained by customs authorities at Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport on January 2 on suspicion of carrying drugs. The Japanese Consulate General in Guangzhou confirmed that they were notified of the situation by customs on January 5 and subsequently dispatched staff to conduct a consular visit with the individuals.
Regarding the current status of the case, one of the individuals was released on bail on February 6, while the other remains in detention. During a press conference in Tokyo on March 25, Chief Cabinet Secretary of Japan Kihara Minoru addressed the details of the case, stating that "the case is in the investigation stage, and I cannot answer from the perspective of privacy protection."
