Tragedy struck the Cathay Pacific flight CX162 from Sydney to Hong Kong on March 23. While en route to Hong Kong International Airport, a 56-year-old female passenger fainted and brought on an immediate medical emergency in the cabin.

The crew immediately responded with first aid and alerted the ground authorities to arrange for the highest priority for an emergency landing. An ambulance was dispatched to meet the plane at the runway so the passenger could obtain immediate medical care as soon as it was on the ground. The aircraft landed at 5:23 PM, with flight tracking data showing it had arrived seven minutes early.
After touching down, the passenger was whisked away by ambulance to North Lantau Hospital. Although she continued to be in coma and was pronounced dead at 6:33 PM on that day despite the immediate efforts taken by the crew and emergency medical team.
The Hong Kong Police Force later revealed that the passenger was an Indian national and that an investigation into the death is ongoing.
A Cathay Pacific spokesperson said the airline "is deeply saddened by the loss of the passenger and has offered its heartfelt condolences to her family."
