One of the most important languages on earth is used constantly in commerce, business, education, and especially for the need to enjoy certain topics which bring a spice to life and people together. The English language is one of the primary languages used today in China, with 200+million English speakers (approximately) in the whole of this nation.

Changsha, Hunan isn't the exception when it comes to those English speakers. The young generation, whether they are in Kindergarten through Senior Year in High School, College, University, professionals in the work place are learning or they need to know some degree of English for a greater level of travel, business formation and employment opportunities.

It isn't the fact that English is the only language needed? No, that is incorrect; but presently it is one of the most influential ones up-there with: Chinese, Spanish, French, Portuguese, Russian, Hindi and Standard Arabic. Therefore, if you are a person who already knows Chinese, you have learned one of the most difficult languages on earth, why not give the English language a go?

On average, people in China already start learning a second-language by the time they are three-years of age. That education will be consecutive for the next 20-years. However, why aren't people learning English in a faster way or in a two-year period? Well, it has to do on how people learn English, approach and the consistency in which they learn it. Another factor is the amount of times a week a person is taking the language; which goes without saying, that any language course ought to be practiced/learned five-times a week between 50-to-200 daily minutes. There are other elements or platforms like duolingo to learn the language. But it has always been important (from my point of view) to learn inside a classroom (the old fashioned way) or interact with other people in public on a daily basis.

Plus, the benefits of learning a second-language are imperative as for any person getting older. For one, it can help an individual to fight against the onset of Dementia and Alzheimer's (other than learning Music, Dance, Sports or studying the Arts for that matter).

As is the case with learning a language, across China there is a beautiful concept of the language corners: whether they are Chinese or English.

At the "Red Lion Pub" here in Changsha, there is the city's favorite publican, Damion Braithwaite, sponsoring these weekly activities. A man who throughout his two-decades in China has established the Red Lion for all Expats and Chinese to enjoy in these cultural events. He is always engaged in social activities with adults and children alike, culture activities in reference to different countries, festivities and holiday themes, music, comedy-hour, bar-crawls, helping to raise money for the less fortunate (Butterfly Children's Hospice) and now, reinvigorating the Language Corners at the Pub (e.g. Chinese and English). Within his Pub one can enjoy the benefits of an English tea with scones on a sweet-Saturday afternoon.

Then, there are the English Clubs: these are ones to enjoy! It is a benefit for the senses when asking questions and learning about one of the weekly topics designed to help all whom are there. It is for the Chinese or Expat to get engage into listening, speaking, and to get the full participation out of an experience that usually takes more effort to really enjoy inside a 50-student classroom. With this Club, it is much easier. The experience inside a Pub allows people to let go of any inhibitions.

Damion is a man who has worn and wears many hats in his career: it doesn't matter if he is teaching, helping the students out with classes or clubs, formerly having been IELTS certified by the British Council and then establishing back in 2025 the "Stella Safe" (programme named in honor of his daughter Stella). His focus is for the Safeguarding and Welfare of Children, because after all, the children are our future. Damion has appeared twice in the "China Daily" newspaper and multiple articles have been written about him here in China.

Therefore, if this piece has sparked your curiosity to join a Chinese or English Corner, it is time to give Damion a visit downtown near Wuyi Square and enjoy a lazy-Saturday afternoon at the Red Lion. If your fancy is a burger/pizza next door, a drink, tea, scones or to have a relaxing conversation at one of the Corners--then the Red Lion is the place to be! Now that all has been said and done, take yourself to the English Corner, why don't ya?
