For international residents in Shanghai and across China, the most impactful part of this update is the enhancement of voice-to-text capabilities, aimed at making cross-border communication much smoother.

1. Voice-to-Text Now Supports "Simultaneous Interpretation"

For many international residents, communicating with local colleagues or friends in Mandarin can sometimes be a challenge. WeChat's updated voice-to-text function now acts as a built-in interpreter to help bridge that gap.

Hold down the voice message button in a chat and speak as usual. After you finish recording, click the "Translate" (翻译) button in the lower-left corner.

The app will convert your speech into text and then automatically translate it into your target language. You can review the translation before sharing it with your contact.

While our example image shows a Chinese voice message being translated into English, this tool is highly versatile for the expat community. The feature currently supports 18 different languages (including Chinese, English, and others). This means you can speak in your native foreign language and have it translated into Chinese, or vice versa, making it an essential tool for daily life and work in China.

If you don't see the "Translate" (翻译) button on your device just yet, don't worry. This feature is currently being rolled out gradually to users across different regions.

2. The "Invisible" Incoming Call Pop-up

We've all faced that moment: an unexpected voice or video call arrives, and you want to pretend you simply didn't see your phone. Previously, "hanging up" would notify the caller that you rejected them.

The "Ignore" function: With the update, you can now click "Ignore" on an incoming call pop-up. The window will disappear from your screen immediately, but the caller will not receive a "Call Rejected" notification. This allows you to gracefully "act" as if you were away from your phone.

3. Locking the Screen During Video Calls

To prevent those awkward moments where a video chat is cut short by an accidental touch, WeChat has introduced a locking mechanism.

During a video call, you can now click the Lock (🔒) icon in the top-right corner to freeze the screen interface. This prevents you from accidentally hanging up the call if you touch the screen by mistake. Like the translation feature, this is also currently in the process of being rolled out to the wider user base.
