People were seen walking through heavy rain in Guangzhou, in South China's Guangdong, on March 30, 2026.

Even though the province has already entered summer, hailstorms have been hitting the area. By Monday noon, 12 orange alerts for hail had been issued, according to Chinese media.

Weather authorities said strong stormy weather would affect Guangdong from Monday to Tuesday. The storms are moving from west to east, bringing heavy rain, strong winds, thunderstorms, and hail. Some areas could even see very strong winds or tornadoes.

Cities like Maoming, Yunfu, northern Guangdong, and parts of the Pearl River Delta are expected to get very heavy rain. Other areas will see thunderstorms, with some places having intense rain.

By around noon on Monday, there were many weather warnings across the province, including alerts for rainstorms, hail, and strong winds.

Earlier, officials said Guangzhou entered summer on March 19 — the earliest since 1961 — so the hail in late March surprised many people.

Experts say hail can form easily during this time because there is enough moisture and unstable weather conditions.

A student from Jinan University said the rain in Guangzhou has been extremely heavy since Sunday, making it hard to travel. Some classes have moved online, and fallen trees have made it unsafe in some areas.

The bad weather also caused major travel problems. At Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport, about 88% of flights were delayed. At Shenzhen Bao'an International Airport, many flights were also delayed or diverted.

High-speed trains were affected too. Strong winds caused damage to railway lines, leading to power outages and service suspensions.

Other nearby regions, including parts of Guangxi, Hunan, Jiangxi, Fujian, and Zhejiang, are also expected to face heavy rain.
