Chinese Man Arrested for Carrying 2,000 Queen Ants in Suitcase
A Chinese traveller was arrested in Kenya after airport officers discovered more than 2,000 live queen ants hidden in his suitcase.
The man, a 27-year-old visitor from China, was stopped by security officers at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi, the capital of Kenya.
He was preparing to leave the country when officials decided to inspect his luggage.
Inside the suitcase, officers found thousands of queen ants packed carefully in small tubes and wrapped in tissue paper.
Investigators later counted over 2,200 ants.
The insects were still alive and appeared to be prepared for transport overseas.
According to the Kenya Wildlife Service, the ants were likely meant to be sold to collectors who keep rare insects.
Queen ants are especially valuable because a single queen can start a whole new colony.
Hobbyists around the world keep ant colonies in special glass habitats to study their behaviour.
Authorities believe the man may have been working with other people who collected the ants locally.
Wildlife officers suspect the insects were intended for the international exotic insect trade, which has become more popular in recent years.
Officials also warned that removing large numbers of insects from nature can damage the environment. Even small creatures like ants play an important role in ecosystems, helping with soil health and plant growth.
The man is now facing charges under Kenya's wildlife protection laws.
If found guilty, he could receive a large fine or even a prison sentence.
The confiscated ants will be examined by experts before being returned to a safe environment.
Wildlife authorities say the case highlights a growing problem of illegal trade in unusual animals and insects, not just large wildlife like elephants or rhinos.
