Authorities in Shanghai have arrested a group of unlicensed practitioners who claimed to perform "bloodletting therapy" to rid people of "evil energy".

Footage released recently by Shanghai TV showing the three individuals administering the therapy to a man has shocked social media.

The video shows the three self-proclaimed doctors inserting a long needle into the man's arm and letting blood flow out along the needle, forming a small pool on the floor.

They reassured him that only about 100ml of blood would be drawn. They also told him what they called "common sense" — that "blood from a healthy person would not flow out through the needle" — in order to convince him that "evil energy" had been removed from his body.

The so-called doctors did not wear medical gloves or masks.Cotton balls and soiled gauze were scattered randomly on the floor.

The person who filmed the video reportedly reported the clinic to local disease control and health supervision authorities.

Law enforcement officers raided the clinic and took action against the unlicensed practitioners and seized their illegal medical equipment.

The clinic was operating without a medical license. One of the practitioners, a repeat offender, was turned over to the police, while the other two received administrative penalties.

Under Chinese law, individuals who illegally practise medicine can face fines of up to 100,000 yuan (US$14,000), and criminal charges in serious cases.

"Isn't bloodletting an outdated, primitive method used before modern medicine?" one online commentator asked.

"If they truly believe bloodletting is good for health, they should just donate blood," another wrote.

"Trusting unlicensed clinics is even more ignorant than believing in bloodletting therapy," commented a third.

Bloodletting therapy remains controversial. It was recorded in ancient Chinese medical texts such as Huangdi Neijing (The Yellow Emperor's Classic of Medicine), compiled mainly between the 4th century BC and the 3rd century AD.

Unlike ancient Western medical bloodletting, which involved drawing large amounts of blood and was later proven dangerous, traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) bloodletting targets specific acupuncture points and uses needles to release only minimal quantities.

Some believe TCM bloodletting can detoxify the body and improve circulation, while others dismiss it as outdated pseudoscience.
