According to authorities, there is sufficient evidence suggesting that the 28-year-old suspect caused harm to the infant, who is now in critical condition. She has been formally charged with "ill-treatment or neglect by those in charge of a child or young person." Her case was brought before the Fanling Magistrates' Court on January 21. Meanwhile, the 45-year-old woman remains in police custody under investigation. The case is being handled by the Tai Po District Crime Squad.

The incident came to light on January 18 when staff at a hospital reported to police that a 4-month-old infant presented with brain and retinal hemorrhages. Medical professionals found the injuries suspicious, suggesting they were caused by external force and consistent with symptoms of "shaken baby syndrome." The police promptly launched an investigation into the family's residence in Sheung Shui.

Investigators discovered that the household had two young children—a 4-month-old and a 16-month-old boy—both primarily cared for by the two foreign domestic workers. Both children were found to have bruises. Surveillance footage reportedly captured the 28-year-old suspect harming the younger infant in the early hours of January 18, and she is also suspected of harming the older child.

As of the latest update, both infants are receiving medical treatment. The 4-month-old is in the intensive care unit after undergoing brain surgery and remains in critical condition. The 16-month-old boy has minor bruises on his thigh and left cheek but is in stable condition. Police are working closely with medical experts to determine the extent and cause of the injuries, including whether the children were subjected to prolonged abuse.

The Hong Kong Police have issued a strong reminder to the public: child abuse is a grave criminal offense. Anyone found guilty of mistreating or neglecting a child in their care can face up to 10 years in prison.
