An elderly man in Tianjin, China, attempted to mail two gold bars hidden inside a jar of chili sauce to scammers, in a strange case recently stopped by police.
The man, surnamed Zhao, was drawn into the scheme after seeing an online ad promising lucrative stock tips. After downloading a fake trading app, he was instructed by "insiders" to buy gold and mail it out for "cashing in."
Police officer Li Ruifang intervened after receiving a fraud alert. After nearly two hours of patient persuasion, Zhao confessed to hiding 30 grams of gold in the sauce jar. When he failed to withdraw money from the app as suggested by the officer, he realized it was a scam.
Authorities contacted the delivery company for an emergency interception, successfully retrieving the package and returning the gold bars to Zhao, helping him recover 34,000 yuan (US$5,000).
The incident, which amused many online, serves as a fresh warning about sophisticated financial scams targeting vulnerable individuals.
