A shopping mall in Shenzhen has deployed an innovative — and embarrassing — deterrent to stop people from smoking in restrooms: smart glass that turns transparent when it detects smoke.
The system, installed in the Shuibei International Center, uses an intelligent smoke-sensing control system. When triggered, the frosted glass of the toilet cubicle becomes completely clear, and an audible alarm sounds simultaneously. A warning sign next to the cubicle reads, "Smoking will make the glass transparent. Do not lose control and end up becoming an online sensation," accompanied by a cartoon "social death" emoji.
Mall management explained that smoking in restrooms has been a persistent issue leading to customer complaints. The trial of this technology has received positive feedback from both tenants and the public, and has proven effective in curbing the behavior. The operations director stated the next step is to promote the installation of the facility in other commercial buildings.
The novel approach has gained widespread support online, with many netizens expressing hope that the "smart glass smoke-detection system" will be widely implemented in public spaces across the country.
