The founder of Chinese education giant New Oriental has sparked a firestorm online after sending an inspirational letter to employees from his holiday in Antarctica—while they were reportedly stuck working late into the night.
Yu Minhong penned the internal message to mark the company's 32nd anniversary, describing the "vast whiteness, emerald icebergs and boundless tranquillity" around him. He drew parallels between Antarctic penguins huddling for survival and his staff's resilience, urging them to remain "sowers of hope."
But the poetic dispatch landed with a thud among employees facing intense work pressure. Many slammed the letter as self-serving and tone-deaf.
On the very day of the anniversary, one employee said they had to work overtime. Another posted a scathing online retort titled "A Reply to Yu Minhong," vividly capturing the disconnect.
"You said the Antarctic glaciers glisten under the sun. Well, I have something that glistens too: the red dot of a social media message notification," the employee wrote. "It is 11:59 pm Beijing time… the moment I fall asleep, I will probably get a message from the boss at midnight."
The post added, sardonically, "If you can think of us overworked nobodies while in Antarctica, it proves that our performance is truly something you are worried about."
Founded in 1993, New Oriental grew from TOEFL prep courses into a listed education behemoth. While it has recently pivoted to e-commerce, internal tensions over work culture appear unchanged—proving that even the most polished corporate messaging can freeze over when it's out of touch with the rank and file.
