Classes & Train Service Suspended, Typhoon Yellow Alert Issued

The National Meteorological Center renewed its yellow alert for Typhoon Tapah and issued a yellow alert for heavy rain at 6 a.m. on September 8.

Typhoon Tapah is forecast to move north-northwest at a speed of about 20 kilometers per hour and is expected to make landfall in the coastal areas between Taishan and Yangjiang in Guangdong around 8 a.m. Packing winds of 28-30 meters per second (10-11 on the Beaufort scale), it is classified as a severe tropical storm. After landfall, it will gradually turn to a westerly direction and weaken in intensity.

Gale Forecast: 

From 8 a.m. September 8 to 8 a.m. September 9, parts of the northern and central South China Sea, the Beibu Gulf, the Qiongzhou Strait, parts of the Xisha Islands, waters near the Zhongsha Islands, the coast of Guangdong, the Pearl River Estuary, the northern coast of Hainan Island, and the coast of Guangxi will experience winds of force 6-7. Some areas in the northern South China Sea and the central and western coast of Guangdong will see winds of force 8-10, with winds reaching force 11 and gusts of force 12-13 in regions directly affected by the typhoon.

Precipitation Forecast: 

During the same period, central and southern Guangdong and central and eastern Guangxi will experience heavy to torrential rain. Some parts of eastern Guangxi and southwestern Guangdong will see severe torrential rain, with extremely heavy rainfall (250-280 mm) in localized areas.

Class Suspensions:

According to the Guangdong meteorological department, the province is expected to experience severe wind and rain from the night of September 7 to the day of September 9. Currently, 26 regions in Guangdong have issued yellow typhoon alerts, and five regions in Yangjiang have issued orange alerts. In accordance with relevant regulations, kindergartens, primary schools, and secondary schools in regions under yellow alert or higher should suspend classes. Verified information shows that education bureaus in Shenzhen (excluding Shenshan), Zhuhai, Yangjiang, Yunfu, as well as parts of Zhanjiang, Maoming, and Jiangmen, have announced class suspensions effective immediately. The date of class resumption will be notified based on the impact of the typhoon.

Transport Disruptions:

Travelers and drivers with plans to cross the sea are advised to closely monitor updates on the typhoon and service suspensions, arrange their schedules accordingly, and avoid going to ports during the suspension period.

1.All trains on the Shenzhen-Zhanjiang Railway and Guangzhou-Maoming Railway are suspended on September 8, with services planned to gradually resume on September 9.

2.Due to the suspension of ferry services across the Qiongzhou Strait, trains to and from Hainan Island on September 7-8 are either canceled or adjusted to start and terminate at Guangzhou Baiyun Railway Station.

Additional train suspensions to and from Hainan Island:

1.All trains to and from the island are suspended on September 8.

2.Inbound trains terminating at Haikou (Z385, Z111, K511) and inbound trains terminating at Sanya (Z501, Z8007) on September 9 are suspended. The outbound train Z386 from Haikou on September 9 is also suspended.

3.Passengers who have purchased tickets for canceled trains can obtain a full refund within 30 days (including the day of departure) via the 12306 website, mobile app, or at manual counters at railway stations, without any service fee. For those who paid in cash or have already printed their reimbursement vouchers, they must return the voucher at the station counter within 180 days (including the day of refund) with the original valid ID used for purchase to receive the refund.
