In a courageous fight for justice, Cui Lili, a 41-year-old former sales supervisor, has taken her former company to court, demanding 2 million yuan (US$280,000) after a horrific ordeal: being raped by her boss on a business trip and then losing her job. This case has gained national attention not only for its shocking facts but also for a groundbreaking legal recognition—authorities have classified the sexual assault she endured as an "industrial injury," a first in China.

The incident occurred in Hangzhou in September 2023. After a client dinner, Cui's boss, Wang, took advantage of her intoxicated state and raped her. While Wang was rightly sentenced to four years in prison in April 2024, Cui faced a second blow—termination from Tianjin Deke Zhikong Company for "absence without good reason" that same month.

The psychological toll was severe. Officially diagnosed with PTSD linked to the rape, Cui's condition was recognized as work-related. Although a labour arbitration panel initially awarded her 1.13 million yuan (US$160,000), a sum the company accepted without appeal, Cui has seen barely any of it. With only 20,000 yuan received, she is now in court seeking full and fair compensation.

Symbolizing her resolve, Cui attended the September 23 hearing wearing the very clothes she was assaulted in. "Last time, I wore it and was humiliated. This time, I wore it to fight for justice," she stated powerfully. She shared her ongoing struggle with PTSD, saying, "My life has been completely ruined."

As the nation watches, the court's verdict is pending. Cui's bravery has inspired many, including actress Yao Chen, who commended her for facing the media and fighting with "belief and wisdom." Cui's final message to other survivors is one of strength: do not blame yourselves.
