Typhoon Podul is strengthening and set to make two landfalls starting tonight. A yellow alert is in effect as heavy rain and strong winds approach southern China.

Yellow Typhoon Alert

The National Meteorological Center (NMC) issued a yellow alert for Typhoon Podul at 6:00 a.m. on August 12. As of 5:00 a.m., the center of this year's 11th typhoon, Podul — classified as a severe tropical storm — was located over the northwestern Pacific Ocean.

Starting on the night of August 12, the core rainfall period of Typhoon Podul will begin, bringing heavy to torrential rain to Taiwan, Fujian, Guangdong, and six other provinces and regions. Residents are advised to prepare for typhoon impacts and take necessary safety precautions.

Landfall is forecast around midday on August 13 along the southeastern coast of Taiwan, with typhoon or severe typhoon intensity (38–45 m/s, force 13–14).The system will then cross Taiwan into the Taiwan Strait, weakening in strength, before making a second landfall between southern Fujian and eastern Guangdong late on August 13 to early August 14 as a severe tropical storm (25–30 m/s, force 10–11). Further weakening is expected after the second landfall.

Rainfall Forecast

Based on the rainfall timeline: On the night of August 12, eastern Taiwan will see heavy rain. On August 13, most of Taiwan, as well as the border area between Fujian and Guangdong, will experience heavy to torrential rain, with localized downpours. On August 14, under the influence of Podul's residual circulation, heavy to torrential rain is expected in northern Guangdong, northern Guangxi, southern Jiangxi, and most of Hunan. By August 15, the typhoon's rainfall impact will be nearing its end, but heavy to torrential rain may still affect northwestern Hunan, northeastern Guizhou, and eastern Chongqing.
