Foreign Traveler Caught with Over €250,000 Cash at Airport
Recently, Guangzhou Customs at Baiyun International Airport apprehended a foreign traveler attempting to bring a large sum of undeclared currency into China. The individual, who had opted for the "Nothing to Declare" customs lane, was caught carrying €256,900 in cash—equivalent to more than RMB 2.12 million—without submitting a declaration.

The discovery was made during a routine inspection of an inbound flight. Customs officers identified anomalies in the luggage scan and proceeded to a detailed check. Upon opening the bag, they uncovered multiple bundles of euro notes.
According to Chinese regulations, physical currency is classified as a restricted item for cross-border transportation. Any inbound passenger carrying over RMB 20,000 in Chinese currency or foreign currency exceeding the equivalent of USD 5,000 must declare it to customs.
