On August 13, traffic police in Shanshan County, Xinjiang, averted a potentially dangerous incident when they discovered a foreign cyclist riding on a busy expressway.
During a routine patrol, officers from the Shanshan County Public Security Bureau's Traffic Management Division spotted a man on a heavily loaded touring bicycle traveling along the high-speed roadway. The cyclist, later identified as a French national, was not only carrying large amounts of luggage but was also occasionally drifting into vehicle lanes — a perilous situation given the high speeds and heavy traffic.
Recognizing the danger, the officers immediately signaled for him to pull over. Due to the language barrier, one officer quickly downloaded a mobile translation app to communicate in real time. Through the translation, they learned that the man was touring Xinjiang by bicycle and heading toward Hami as part of his travel itinerary.
Police explained that bicycles and pedestrians are strictly prohibited on expressways in China due to the high speeds involved, which leave little time for drivers to react and pose significant safety risks. Once he understood the situation, the cyclist expressed his willingness to cooperate and leave the expressway.
Officers then escorted him to the nearest exit and directed him toward the national highway leading to Hami — a safer and more suitable route for his journey.
Authorities reminded the public that "of the many rules on the road, safety is always the first," urging all travelers to follow traffic regulations to avoid dangerous situations.
