According to reports, Zhang Qifeng, founder of a domestic robotics company, said his team is working on what could become the world's first pregnancy robot. The system mimics a uterine environment and is embedded in a humanoid robot, allowing the "robot mother" to replicate the full process of human pregnancy and childbirth.
For now, the core technology is essentially an advanced incubator — already relatively mature — but redesigned to fit into a humanoid robot's abdomen. The company expects to unveil a prototype within a year, with a target price of under 100,000 yuan (approx. USD 14,000).
Zhang, who earned his Ph.D. from Nanyang Technological University in Singapore in 2014, turned down a 600,000-yuan annual teaching salary to pursue robotics entrepreneurship. He later founded Guangzhou Kayiwa Robot Technology Co., Ltd. in 2015, known for its restaurant service and reception robots.
The announcement has sparked heated online debate. Supporters call it groundbreaking and note the price is within reach. Critics dismiss it as impractical or risky, with some quipping, "We could use a household robot first."
Is this a revolutionary leap in reproductive technology — or a futuristic vision that's still far from reality? What do you think?
