On July 4, WeChat announced a major update introducing enhanced features for chat history backup, making it more user-friendly, flexible, and secure.
Here are the key highlights:
1. External Storage Support: An Extra 500 GB from "Outside Help"
WeChat now allows chat history to be backed up directly to external storage devices such as USB drives and portable hard drives. This means family members sharing the same computer or storage device can back up their data separately without risking privacy breaches or data interference.

WeChat > Me > Settings > General > Chat Log Migration & Backup > Backup & Restore
2. From Manual to Automatic: Hassle-Free Backups
No more manual triggers—WeChat now supports automatic backups. Once your phone is connected to a trusted device previously enabled for "Auto Backup," the system will automatically begin backing up your chat history, taking convenience to the next level.
3. Flexible Backup Options: Back Up What You Want, When You Want
Users can now customize backup settings in detail. Options include:
Backing up all chats
Backing up all chats except folded groups
Selecting specific chats via tags or manual selection
Defining a specific time range for backup
This level of control ensures that backups are both efficient and tailored to individual needs.
4. New Method for Chat Migration: Move Without Logging Into Your Old Phone
Switching to a new phone? Transferring your chat history is now easier than ever.
With just a QR code scan, your new phone can export chat records without needing to log into your old device. You can also import chats directly from another phone or external device—or export them to a computer, another phone, or a tablet.
