Throughout July, 12-Bar Blues—That's Shanghai Cocktail Bar of the Year, Editors Choice—will be hosting a bartending class every Saturday for "mixing and life experience."
Priced at just RMB199, there will be perfume, coffee and even yoga also happening during the courses.
July 5 will be a personal cocktail flavoring course with options such as peppermint, citrus, and other summery tastes.
A perfume will also be crafted for something fun to take home. The course includes two cocktails and a takeaway 15ml perfume mini.

July 12 goes deeper, with a psychological dive into cocktail creation, considering each creator's unique personality based on the Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI).
This personality test will be taken before creating a personal cocktail recipe card (and, of course, enjoying the cocktail itself).

July 19 is a class on combining coffee and cocktails, plus techniques in using coffee filters to milk-wash.
The focus here will be on creating stunning cocktails both in flavor and appearance.
Two cocktails and a hand-poured coffee will be enjoyed during this episode.

The final class on July 26 will be an interesting duality of yoga and cocktails. First, participants will partake in some sunset stretching, followed by a fermented cocktail to enjoy the summer evening.
There will also be a special fruit fermentation to bring home afterwards.

Papuwa, Chengdu

Papuwa, Chengdu's vibrant and unconventional cocktail bar, has set up a temporary residency at Shanghai's popular Chinese restaurant SIHE.
The pop-up features 16 eclectic cocktails, all priced at RMB108, and each showcasing unexpected ingredients and cultural influences.
Standouts include The Silk Road, a rum-based cocktail with Sichuan smoked plum, Indian masala, and Turkish coffee, served flaming in a vertebrae-shaped mug.
Running until July 19, Papuwa's pop-up is a must-visit for cocktail enthusiasts seeking creativity, fire, and fun.

@ Bar Choice – July 9
Bar Choice welcomes bar Folklore of Tokyo—named No.76 on Asia's 50 Best Bars in 2024—for a one-night-only journey into the Japanese capital's nightlife legacy.
Their concept is a celebration of Japanese spirits (sake, shochu, awamori), applying 'Kurogo Philosophy' where local liquors act as subtle flavor enhancers.
Two members of their team, Yukino Sato and Shogo Kageyama, will be mixing it up from 8pm until they sell out.

Birds of Paradise (circa 2020)

Harkening back to an older and shinier version of Shanghai (before those messy few years happened) a bar called Birds of Paradise (BOP) used to sing of summer in the heat, with a tropical tiki theme.

One of the creators behind that adventure, and the main man behind Union Trading Co., Yao Lu will be resurrecting their vision with a pop-up at UTC.
For roughly half of the month of July, the tropical vibe is being maintained by family-owned rum producer Flor de Caña, in celebration of Rum Month at UTC.
There are also guest shifts from prior BOP bar stars Lucky Huang of Boo's (July 10, Folen Cheng of Pop Corner (July 14), and Bella Lin of Flask (July 17).
Be sure to stop in for memories of Shanghai past served in a glass!

They are also committed to sustainability, creatively repurposing leftover ingredients from the cocktail-making process into pairing desserts and garnishes.

Jez Carreon will be crafting cocktails, a bartender of particular interest for having been crowned the World's Most Sustainable Bartender by Nicaraguan rum brand Flor de Caña at their 2025 Sustainable Cocktail Challenge.

Opened earlier this year, Bar O.J. is already renovating their cocktail menu, ready for the incoming hot season.
Cocktails, priced RMB98 or RMB118, are still represented on the menu by happy dancing food characters.
A banana and rice bestie-duo represents a cocktail containing rum, toasted rice, banana and soy sauce…
… while a sassy corn cartoon is the avatar for a cocktail with tequila, pineapple, coconut, corn and fizz—a 'corn colada' if you will.
Bar O.J is always a good time, but it's small—so make sure to arrive early or else take a summer evening streetside break.
