Power banks at airports have been a hot topic lately. But do international flights have new regulations for them?
Current Regulations Apply Only to Domestic Flights
At present, the "New Regulations on Power Banks" only apply to domestic flights, and there are no such requirements for international flights. However, if a passenger transits through domestic flights after entering the country, they will still have to undergo security checks under the new rules for power banks. At the same time, the new regulations are only applicable to power banks. Cameras with lithium batteries are still subject to the previous regulations. The new rules by the Civil Aviation Administration of China do not affect rail transport, where previous regulations continue to apply.
Passengers can check if their power bank is subject to a recall by visiting the "Consumer Product Recall" section on the official website of the National Market Supervision Administration's Defective Product Recall Technical Center. Power banks produced overseas do not need to be inspected according to the 3C or recall requirements and should follow the original standards. Products capable of reverse charging will still be inspected according to the original standards.
Power Bank Storage Services at Multiple Airports
Beijing Capital International Airport offers free power bank storage services at its two terminals, with the storage period lasting up to 7 days. If not retrieved by the end of the storage period, the power bank is considered abandoned. The storage locations at Terminal 3 are at the T3 Passenger Service Center on the first floor of the parking building, and at Terminal 2, it is located at the T2 Passenger Service Center on the underground floor.
Beijing Daxing International Airport also offers courier and temporary storage services for power banks. Passengers can also mail their power banks through the JD Express service point located outside the domestic departure security area.
Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport and Pudong International Airport have clear notices at entrances, check-in areas, and security checkpoints, and power bank disposal bins are available at the entrances and security areas. Both airports currently offer a 7-day power bank storage service. At Hongqiao's Terminal 2, power bank storage is located outside Gate 10 near H Island and beside the OFF The Rack store. At Pudong Airport, power bank storage is located near the metro entrance close to the Airport Hotel.
Shenzhen Baoan International Airport has posted promotional reminders inside the terminal to inform passengers of the new regulations. For power banks that cannot be carried on the plane, Shenzhen Baoan International offers free storage services. The storage location is at the B Island counter at the end of the check-in island on the fourth floor, and the storage period is also 7 days. Staff will issue a receipt to passengers, who must pick up their items within the storage period. Items not picked up within the time limit will be considered abandoned.
Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport allows passengers to either abandon non-compliant power banks or store them at the airport. Currently, ZTO Express provides mailing services for power banks.
Hangzhou Xiaoshan International Airport offers power bank storage services for up to 10 days.
