A Japan Airlines (JAL) Boeing 737 flight from Shanghai to Narita has made an emergency landing at Kansai International Airport.
On the evening of June 30, a Boeing 737-800 operating flight JL8696 (also known as IJ004 under code-sharing), traveling from Shanghai Pudong to Tokyo Narita, made an emergency landing at Kansai International Airport around 8:50 p.m. local time. The Osaka Aviation Bureau under Japan's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) confirmed that all 191 passengers and crew on board were safe, with no injuries reported.
The aircraft triggered a warning indicating a malfunction in its pressurization system. A suspected cabin depressurization occurred, leading the flight crew to declare an emergency and divert to Kansai Airport. During the flight, the plane experienced a rapid descent from approximately 10,000 meters to about 3,000 meters in altitude within ten minutes. The aircraft landed safely at around 7:50 p.m.
Videos shared by passengers showed oxygen masks deploying inside the cabin. Several passengers described a weightless sensation and intense ear pressure during the emergency descent.
A relative of a passenger confirmed the safe landing and said, "My friend said the plane had a serious technical issue. It was scary, but the exact cause is unknown."
Japan Airlines and Spring Airlines Japan, which operate the shared flight under different codes, are investigating the incident. Spring Airlines later clarified that its own flights under the 9C code were unaffected and all operations were normal.
