Chikungunya Outbreak: 1,873 Confirmed Cases in Foshan
Health authorities in Foshan, Guangdong Province, have confirmed 1,873 cases of chikungunya fever across three districts as of Saturday. The outbreak, which began with an imported case reported on July 8 in Shunde district, has since spread, prompting a citywide emergency response.
Shunde remains the most affected area, reporting 1,790 cases. Nearby districts Nanhai and Chancheng recorded 34 and 49 cases, respectively. All infections have been classified as mild, with no serious or fatal outcomes. Health officials confirmed that 720 patients have recovered so far.
In response, Foshan launched a coordinated campaign involving various government departments, including health, education, urban management, housing, and transportation. Large-scale mosquito control efforts were deployed in high-risk areas, leading to a significant drop in mosquito density—with one-third of affected zones now considered safe.
The public has been urged to keep living spaces clean and remove stagnant water to stop mosquito breeding. Targeted disinfection teams have also been working door-to-door in impacted neighbourhoods.
Foshan's Centre for Disease Control and Prevention continues to monitor the situation closely.
