On June 16, Mr. Xu, along with his girlfriend and family, traveled from Shandong to Beijing and checked into the Orange Crystal Hotel in Chongwenmen, Dongcheng District. The next evening around 6 p.m., they requested a toiletry kit from the hotel's cleaning staff. Hours later, in the early morning, Mr. Xu discovered a testing device at the bottom of the kit. A quick online search revealed it was part of an HIV test kit, and to their alarm, it bore traces of blood.

Mr. Xu and his girlfriend had already used the toothbrush and toothpaste from the same kit, prompting immediate concern. They sought medical attention and were administered emergency prophylactic medication. Initial HIV antibody tests returned negative for both, but doctors informed them that a definitive result would only be possible after three months. One doctor also noted that the faint line marked "HIV1/2" on the kit suggested a potential positive result from a prior use.

Conflicting Statements from Hotel and Guest

The hotel, when contacted, attributed the incident to a mix-up by cleaning staff, who allegedly handed over an unsealed, previously used toiletry bag by mistake. Staff emphasized that their sealed kits come with valid hygiene certifications and are routinely checked. Surveillance footage showing the staff checking the bag was reportedly submitted to authorities.

On June 19, hotel headquarters confirmed the incident had led to serious disciplinary action against the involved employee. Both public health authorities and police are investigating the origins of the HIV kit. The hotel stated that it would take full responsibility for any health risks or follow-up medical costs.

However, Mr. Xu's account differs. He denies requesting compensation, though the hotel claimed the guest demanded an amount far exceeding ¥3,000, which they declined. Mr. Xu stated that both sides had reached a private agreement but could not disclose details. He also refuted claims that the test kit was not in the bag, asserting that the matter had already been clearly explained to the police.

Huazhu Group Responds

The Huazhu Group, parent company of the Orange Crystal brand, issued an apology to Mr. Xu and his girlfriend. They admitted the hotel's failure in providing a sealed kit violated strict safety regulations. The group reaffirmed its commitment to covering all follow-up testing and treatment expenses and is fully cooperating with authorities during the investigation.
