A foreign airline's aircraft sparked online discussion after reportedly attempting to land on an under-construction runway at Xi'an Xianyang International Airport before executing a go-around.

According to social media posts, the flight was initially instructed to land on Runway 23L (South Runway 1) but instead approached Runway 24L (South Runway 2, still under construction). Air traffic control promptly ordered a go-around, after which the plane safely landed on Runway 23R (North Runway 1).

When contacted by reporters, airport staff confirmed that Xi'an Xianyang currently operates two runways (North 1 and South 1), with South Runway 2 still in its final testing phase. However, the customer service department stated they had not received any official notice regarding the incident.

South Runway 2, part of the airport's expansion, recently underwent full-circuit power testing and lighting checks. Once operational, it will become the airport's second smart runway.

Aviation experts weighed in on the possibility of such mishaps. Senior Captain Chen Jianguo explained that new runways must pass inspections, including trial flights, before opening. "Mistaken landings, even on taxiways, can occasionally happen," he noted.

An industry insider later disclosed to reporters that the incident did occur—a flight crew misidentified the runway during approach but performed a go-around upon instruction from air traffic control, ultimately landing safely. Another airport employee also verified the event.
