Shanghai Pudong Airport's New 24/7 Policy Wins Praise: "So Convenient!"

Travelers arriving at Shanghai Pudong International Airport in the early hours now have a reason to celebrate. A new initiative has been launched from the May Day holiday: Terminal 1's domestic departure security checkpoint is now open 24 hours a day.

This move comes as a major relief for passengers arriving on late-night international flights who face early domestic transfers. Previously, the limited hours for security screening meant many had to wait in common areas without access to more comfortable or secure spaces past midnight.

On May 10, a traveler surnamed Chen shared his experience online. Arriving in Shanghai around midnight, he needed to catch a domestic flight the next morning. "I was pleasantly surprised to find that I could go through security immediately after arrival and find a quiet spot to rest," he said. "It saved me a lot of hassle."

Mr. Chen boarded his domestic flight at 9 a.m., well-rested and stress-free. "24-hour security access is fantastic for passengers like us, especially those on red-eye flights," he added.

Airport officials confirmed that the 24/7 access at T1 began during the recent holiday and will continue for the foreseeable future. In contrast, Terminal 2's domestic security opens daily at 4:30 a.m.

Compared to other major Chinese airports—Beijing Capital, Beijing Daxing, and Guangzhou Baiyun—Pudong stands out. Those airports still tie their domestic security operations to the first and last flights of the day, without round-the-clock access.

The public reaction online has been overwhelmingly positive, with many praising the convenience and foresight of the move. Travelers hope other major hubs will soon follow suit.
