Starting May 10, 2025, China will offer nationwide access to marriage registrations involving foreigners.
According to the Shanghai Municipal Civil Affairs Bureau, as of May 1, 2025, residents with permanent household registration in the districts of Baoshan, Jiading, Jinshan, Songjiang, Qingpu, Fengxian, and Chongming will be able to handle marriage registrations involving foreigners, residents from Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, and overseas Chinese at local marriage registration offices. This means that such marriage registrations will be available across all 16 districts in Shanghai.
From May 10, 2025, marriage registration will be fully implemented with "nationwide access." At that time, marriage registrations for foreigners, residents from Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, and overseas Chinese will also be included in the "nationwide access" service. Individuals from across the country will be able to handle such marriage registrations at municipal-level marriage registration offices or any district-level office.
