China therapist collects waste, earns more than in clinic

A 26-year-old therapist in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, has become an online sensation after sharing her unique dual life: working as a therapist by day and helping her parents at a waste recycling station by night. Xiong, whose surname is the only detail disclosed, works full-time at a small private hospital's rehabilitation department. However, after her 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. shift, she heads straight to the family-run recycling station, primarily dealing with metal waste.

At the station, Xiong assists her parents in sorting, carrying, transporting, and selling recyclables. They usually wrap up their tasks around 9 p.m. and head home together. In addition to Xiong's help, her parents employ two workers to operate machinery and drive trucks.

While Xiong earns a monthly salary of 4,000 yuan (US$550) at the hospital, she doesn't receive a formal salary from her parents. However, they frequently give her spending money, which collectively exceeds her full-time income. Xiong has been involved in the recycling business since childhood and sees it as a way to support her parents and acquire practical skills.

"I have switched my roles between my full-time job and this sideline one. I pay careful attention to personal hygiene while working at the hospital," Xiong said. Her story has sparked widespread discussion online, intriguing many about her balanced life between therapy and recycling.
