Beijing’s Wild Weather :From 30°C Heat to Egg-Sized Hail in Hours

-

Beijing residents experienced a wild weather swing on Tuesday, baking in 32.3°C heat by day only to face egg-sized hailstones after dark. In the evening, parts of the city were hammered by hailstones ranging from 1 to 4 centimeters in diameter, leaving residents stunned and vehicles damaged.

At 8 p.m., the Beijing Meteorological Observatory warned of thunderstorms with short-term gales of up to level 8 intensity and hail. It issued yellow thunderstorm, blue wind, and yellow hail warnings, highlighting the risk of severe gusts and hail in some areas overnight.

By 8:33 p.m., hail mixed with thunderstorms hit the Haidian district. The observatory cautioned that large hailstones could cause damage. Online photos showed hailstones up to 4 centimeters in diameter, with some residents comparing them to eggs.

Beijinger Liu, who has lived in the city for decades, called the hailstorm "exceptionally rare." Netizens highlighted the bizarre contrast between the day's high heat and the sudden nighttime hail.

He Na, the observatory's chief forecaster, explained that the high temperatures contributed to atmospheric energy accumulation, which, combined with favorable conditions, triggered intense convective weather. This mix of energy and moisture created ideal conditions for the severe storm, with convective activity starting earlier in the city's western and northern areas.
