3 men convicted of raping minors executed in China

Three individuals — surnamed Zhao, Wang and Chen — convicted of raping minors were executed on Friday after the sentences were approved by China's Supreme People's Court (SPC), according to China Central Television.

Between April 2018 and March 2019, Zhao, who worked as an instructor at an illegal "education base," formed a gang with several other instructors. They subjected dozens of minor students to abuse and illegal detention through methods such as beatings, verbal abuse, corporal punishment, forced labor and solitary confinement, according to the CCTV report.

Exploiting the psychological control established by these abusive acts, Zhao used coercion, enticement and video recordings to repeatedly rape eight underage trainees, three of whom were young girls. He even forced the victims to take birth control pills for extended periods, causing many to develop gynecological diseases.

Along with committing intentional harm and fraud, Zhao was sentenced to death by the first- and second-instance courts, and the SPC approved the decision, CCTV reported.

In Wang's case, from September 2019 to May 2022, he targeted elementary and middle school girls on a social media platform. Posing as a director recruiting child actors and actresses, he first tricked and coerced these underage victims into sending nude or inappropriate photos and videos, per report.

Then, either by luring them out under the pretext of a physical examination or threatening to expose the explicit content, Wang raped and molested nine underage girls, including seven prepubescent girls and one with mental impairments. During the rapes, he recorded the acts to force the victims into further submission, repeatedly and severely abusing some of the girls.

Additionally, Wang molested 10 other prepubescent girls and one boy. The first- and second- instance courts sentenced him to death, a ruling that was later affirmed by the SPC, according to the CCTV.

Chen, an offender previously convicted of rape, carried out his crimes from January to April 2022. By pretending to be a peer, he joined more than 20 QQ and WeChat groups created by junior high school students, randomly adding female students as friends. He raped three prepubescent girls seven times, attempted to rape another minor, and used recorded videos of the rapes to threaten them into further compliance, leading some of the girls to self-harm, attempt suicide, or drop out of school.

Chen also organized three gang rapes of one of the girls and facilitated her sexual exploitation for profits. Moreover, he molested two other prepubescent girls and committed extortion. The first- and second- instance courts sentenced him to death, a decision ultimately approved by the SPC, said the report.

A judge from  of the SPC No.1 Criminal Tribunal emphasized that Chinese courts have always adhered to a "zero tolerance" approach to sexual crimes against minors. By fully exercising their judicial functions, the courts are committed to severely punishing offenders, CCTV reported.
