Gen Z and millennials are embracing retro technology, using old iPhones like the first-gen iPhone SE, iPhone 6s, and 5s, along with digital cameras, to take photos. Many carry two phones: the latest model for everyday use and an older one for photography, following the "young-tro" trend, which combines youth and nostalgia.
For example, Park Soo-yeon, a 22-year-old university student in South Korea, uses an old iPhone 5s for pictures because it gives her photos a nostalgic, vintage feel, even though she's capturing current moments. The trend has grown in popularity, with many young people preferring the aesthetic of older iPhones, the home button, and the unique color tones of their photos.
As demand for older iPhones rises, prices have increased. The first-gen iPhone SE is now sold for over 200,000 won (about $140) on second-hand markets, and the iPhone 6s sells for around 100,000 won.
Old digital cameras are also seeing a comeback, sparked by the K-pop group NewJeans using a vintage camcorder for their music video, leading to even higher prices and scarcity in stores.
Experts say this trend shows how young people are blending the past with modern technology, enjoying the experience of using devices from an era they didn't live through.
