Woman Blocks Gate with Embassy Car, Claims Diplomatic Immunity
Recently, a video of a parking violation gained widespread attention on social media. The incident, which took place on June 16th in Beijing, involved a vehicle with diplomatic plates parked in the middle of the road. The driver, a woman, claimed diplomatic immunity when confronted by other drivers who reported the situation to the police. Traffic officers subsequently arrived on the scene to handle the situation.
According to @BeijingNews, on June 19th, Yu Qi, the current Secretary-General of the Asia-Pacific Space Cooperation Organization (APSCO), issued an apology for her inappropriate behavior, accompanied by a video message. In the video, Yu expressed a deep sense of remorse for her actions, acknowledging the negative impact her behavior had on the international organization she represents. She sincerely accepted the criticisms and stated that she would comply with any disciplinary measures from relevant authorities.
On June 19th, @BeijingPolice released an official report regarding the incident. The report detailed that a vehicle with diplomatic plates caused a traffic dispute at the intersection of Guangxin Street and Guangtai East Road in Chaoyang District. Preliminary police investigations revealed that the vehicle was registered to an international organization. On the morning of June 16th, Xu (male, 61) and Yu (female, 58), both employed by the international organization, drove to the location and parked their car in the middle of the road, violating parking regulations and obstructing traffic. When reminded to move their car, they refused and insulted bystanders, making inappropriate remarks that caused a significant social disturbance.
The traffic control authorities imposed a fine for the traffic violation. Additionally, the local police discovered that Xu and Yu were illegally keeping a dog, which led to further legal action according to statutory procedures. An administrative case was opened to investigate Yu's public misconduct.
As reported by China National Radio, APSCO, founded in 2008, is an intergovernmental organization in the Asia-Pacific region with independent international legal status. It is the second intergovernmental regional space cooperation organization after the European Space Agency. APSCO aims to provide a platform for technological cooperation among countries in the region, promoting the peaceful use of outer space. The organization focuses on multilateral cooperation in space science, technology, and applications, enhancing the space capabilities of developing countries, and fostering sustainable regional economic and social development through technological research, application, education, training, and resource sharing.
