Two Foreigners Attacked ： Ministry of Foreign Affairs Responds!

  On June 25, during the regular press conference at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, spokesperson Mao Ning responded to the incident on June 24 involving the attack on two foreigners.

  TV Tokyo: Yesterday in Suzhou, Japanese parent and child were stabbed in an incident. Was this incident targeted at Japanese people or random attack? Do you have any more detailed information? 

  Mao Ning: On the afternoon of 24 June, two Japanese nationals living in Suzhou of Jiangsu Province were attacked. One Chinese national was wounded on the scene. They were immediately taken to hospital and given timely treatment. The injuries of the two Japanese nationals are non-life threatening. The wounded Chinese national is still being rescued at the hospital. The attacker was captured on the spot. The case is under further investigation. It was a regrettable incident.   

  As I've learned, according to preliminary police assessment, this was an isolated incident. Further investigation is still under way. Such isolated incidents could happen in any country in the world. China will continue to take effective measures to protect the safety of all foreign nationals in China like protecting our own citizens.

Police Report

  On June 25, the Suzhou High-tech Zone Branch of the Suzhou Public Security Bureau issued a police report:

  At around 4 PM on June 24, a knife attack occurred at the Xindi Center bus stop on Tayuan Road in Suzhou High-tech Zone, resulting in three people being injured (one Chinese national and two Japanese nationals). Patrol officers from our bureau promptly arrived at the scene and apprehended the suspect, Zhou (male, 52, unemployed and recently arrived in Suzhou from another region), and immediately sent the injured to the hospital for treatment. Currently, the Chinese national, who was severely injured while trying to stop the suspect, is still under emergency treatment; one Japanese national is being treated and is in stable condition, while the other Japanese national was discharged on the same day. Zhou has been criminally detained. The investigation is ongoing, and the criminal behavior will be severely punished in accordance with the law.
