Shanghai South Railway Station was originally built in the early 20th century as the starting point of the Shanghai-Hangzhou-Ningbo Railway, primarily serving passenger trains. On July 1, 2006, the newly rebuilt Shanghai South Station was put into operation.

The most distinctive feature of Shanghai South Station is its unique design. The main station building features a circular dome steel structure with a diameter of 278 meters and a central height of 42 meters, resembling a giant UFO hovering over the railway lines, giving it a futuristic look.

The station covers an area of over 50,000 square meters and features a design that allows for north-south access, elevated waiting areas, and a high-in, low-out passenger flow. The station includes a circular elevated platform and a vast underground space of nearly 200,000 square meters. It is well-connected with Shanghai's metro system, making it convenient for passengers to transfer to various public transportation options.
