Character learning can literally benefit your daily life in China.
Take this virus epidemic time as an example. How many times have you met a Chinese sign of which you know it's a reminder or warning of something, but all the crowded characters on it are driving you crazy
However, think about it: is it really this difficult to understand all these announcements on the wall?
Which HSK level do I need to get to understand all this information in Chinese? (Not only these virus-related signs/notices, but also a number of other more general but necessary informational posters in Chinese.)
Well, I'm writing this post to give you the answer.
I randomly took a few photos of some epidemic related notices on the street the other day when I went out for a walk.
I did a bit analysis on these photos: on the notices I passed by, there are only 4 words not covered by the HSK 1-5 syllabus. They are:
kuzhoMask
yqngepedemic
xioddisinfect
fn Hreturn to Shanghai*H, Shanghai's abbreviated name, you can see this character on the car plates in Shanghai
In spite of these 4 words, all of the other characters are within HSK1-5 textbooks. There are 34 characters in all. Among these 34 characters that I have marked below, over 60% are in HSK1-3, and around 88% are in HSK1-4.

Besides, I also want to remind you, when you start to learn Chinese, try to read the signs often and then try to figure out the meaning of what you see, once you do this you can become friends with the characters. Characters aren't just textbook knowledge. Characters are your daily life in China! One day you will find out that you can read more than you ever imagined!
To those who have a bit of a fear of this exotic writing system and have avoided learning them for years, I hope that through this article you will understand how close the HSK vocabulary is to (y)our life.
