As per the news released by Chinacourt.org on December 18th, recently the people's Court of Xiaoshan District, Hangzhou, Zhejiang, sentenced a Chinese man named Fu.

The news, as it was posted on Chinacourt.org

He was sentenced to three years' imprisonment, three years' probation and 85,000 Yuan due to copyright infringement.

In March 2017, Fu downloaded foreign books from foreign forums to his net-disk, posted the book information through Taobao and WeChat, and made profits from sales. Not long after, Taobao found that Fu's shop violated the relevant operation regulations and laws, and banned the shop.

However, it didnt stop Fu, instead, soon he opened another shop on Taobao.

In order to avoid being busted again, Fu found some ways around Taobao's system, where he posted book details on WeChat along with the shopping link on Taobao.

This method used a way of cross-selling a digital copy plus a code, which actually worked.

On July 27, 2019, the public security organ found that Fu was suspected of illegally selling e-books on the Internet, and arrested Fu on the same day.

According to statistics, from March 2017 to July 2019, Fu, the defendant, illegally copied 2859 English e-books from overseas websites, and sold 14226 English e-books through Taobao and WeChat, with a total transaction amount of more than 160,000 Yuan.

After the trial, the court held that Fu, the defendant, had illegally copied and distributed works for the purpose of making profits without the permission of the copyright owner. The amount of illegal income was huge, the facts of the crime were clear, the evidence was true and sufficient, and his act constituted the crime of infringing copyright, so the court made the above judgment.
