What Are All Those Chinese People Doing Late at Night?

According to a report published by China's Ministry of Commerce on the consumption habits of urban residents, 60% of consumption occurs at night, when sales from shopping malls take up half of an entire days worth of purchases between 6 PM and 10 PM.


Why is that?

 

The evening economy has become an increasing interest to retailers, who have seen significant growth and potential for maximized revenue and are backed by local governments to drive more traffic. 


For instance, the city of Changsha in Hunan province has recently introduced its new landmark to evening crawlers a food court open until late hours, where snack orders have increased by 160% around nighttime!


Changsha's nightlife attracts not only local residents but also tourists from all over the world.


Stinky tofu is a famous specialty snack of Changsha.


Crayfish is also a local specialty. One particular shop in Changsha sells 8,000 jin (4,800 kg) of crayfish in one night, which commonly generates long queues with ticket numbers reaching up No. 3000 or even 40000. The crave is real!



While some cities may be dead asleep by 10 PM, the streets of Changsha are very much alive and noisy.


According to data obtained from Meituan, the number of orders for night snacks in Changsha has increased by more than 50% since the previous year, with purchase rush hours peaking between 9 PM and 11 PM, accounting for about 70% of the total orders in one day. 


Orders between 3 AM and 4 AM have also increased by a whopping 160%.

On a weekend, Chengdus live house shows can attract nearly 200 spectators, who quickly fill up the entire venue.

Beijing is the second largest city in China in terms of total retail consumption. In order to maximize profits from the citys late-night wanderers and their curiosity, keeping bookstores in popular districts open all night has become a strategic revenue stream. 


Shanghai


Shanghai is has been well known as Chinas "city that never sleeps". In the first half of 2019, it ranked first among Chinese cities in terms of total retail sales.


Evening food consumption, culture and entertainment are among the top industries in China, and Shanghai certainly knowns how to make a few extra RMB with its 24/7 convenience stores, gyms open all night, and other cultural performances available to residents and tourists.
