On September 4th, a cover story about a foreign couple who met each other in Xiamen, Fujian and successfully ran startup companies became a hit on the local media. Needless to say, many netizens were amazed by their story.
A Xia and Boluo
Joanna, Polish, nicknamed "Asia" and thus called "A Xia" by Chinese, a fluent mandarin speaker and good Southern Fujian Dialect singer, as well as a talented interior designer, has a dream to be a Xiamen-ese.
Pablo, Chilean, usually called Boluo (the same pronunciation of pineapple in Chinese) by people, came to Xiamen for his red wine business in 2013.
A Xia and Boluo met each other in China and turned their romance into marriage. Besides a sweet love life, they also set up their own businesses successfully, and were driven by their determination to build a life in Xiamen.
She integrated Xiamen Through Continuous Learning
After graduating from the Chinese Department of Warsaw University in Poland, A Xia took a scholarship to Xiamen University, and has been in Xiamen for 12 years. During this time, A Xia tried her hand at several jobs including restaurant manager and fashion designer assistant.
However, she was finally encouraged by Boluo, and co-founded an art space design company with her Chinese friend Huang and served as the design director in it.
As the saying goes, When in Rome, Do as the Romans Do, A Xia learned the Chinese way of thinking in addition to design and singing.
"Every day I walk, ride a bicycle, eat and work. I see with my eyes, listen with my ears, and absorb all constantly. If you want to develop a career here, you have to learn. said A Xia.

Designer and Singer
Customers say that each piece of A Xias design has a unique soul, which is true. Once designing for a power-related company, A Xia transformed their cable shafts into tables, which was an outside the box idea. In another case, she was to design a restaurant in the style of ancient southern Fujian which was unfamiliar to her. Thus, she and Huang visited many old houses to find some ideas.
In order to buy old things, they went to all the antique markets to look for them. For some materials that they couldn't find there, they would then go to the countryside to find them. In order to embody the style of southern Fujian, they focused on every detail, with the idea to keep things authentic.
With such devotion, its no wonder that they made it more than what the customer had expected.
In addition to her startup, A Xia was also active on stage as a singer. With Boluos supportshe attended a show on Zhejiang TV, where she sang various songs about China in several languageswhich gained her fame and admiration from the vast audience.
