If thats how I react to spicy food from home, then I cant imagine what it must be like for provinces like Sichuan, Hunan, Guizhou, or Jiangxi
Luckily, I didnt have to think too much about it once I came across a post thatd been shared around on Weibo.
One user told the story of her friend who had traveled to Chongqing and tried the spiciest hot pot they had. At first, she said it wasnt spicy at all
until she was sent to the emergency room at the hospital.
Theres a valuable lesson to learn from this: manage your own expectations, and for the love of god, know your own limits! Haha
Following this unfortunate (but quite funny) experience, other users spoke out and shared their own.
I was always constipated. But after I visited Chongqing, I went to the
toilet at least three times a day.
When we went to eat" chuan chuan" , the owner of the restaurant said: "We only have slightly spicy and barely spicy flavors.
I ordered the barely spicy one, but it was so spicy that I cried...
I went traveling with my friends and we ate hot pot every day.
The result was...
One friend got gastroenteritis, and another friend got gastric ulcer.
I once ate spicy hot pot for 5 days straight. Surprisingly, my stomach was fine, but it ruined my face!! My skin broke out and showed tons of pimples! I also couldnt stop farting all day and it was super stinky!!!
I'm not good at eating spicy food. But my friends asked me to go traveling to Chongqing where we ordered spicy hot pot there. I just tasted a sip of the soup - just a sip!!! But
My stomach and chrysanthemum still hurt.
Im a man, and I went to Chongqing to try their super spicy chicken wings. I couldnt stop crying...
Then some buffed guy came up to me, gave me a pat on my shoulder and said: Theres nothing in life that cant be crossed. It feels rough now, but cheer up and move on! Easier said than done
I just I looked up and didnt say a word because of how hot and spicy my whole mouth was.
The biggest lie people from Sichuan and Chongqing will tell you is, "Eat, its really not that spicy at all"!!!
One of my classmates is from Hubei province. She brought some spicy food to school and said that it was very sweet but not spicy at all, so I trusted her and tried a bite. .... OMG, so spicy!!!!!!!!!!
I didn't know people from Jiangxi were so good at eating spicy food. They are too low profile!
Last time I visited, I went to a restaurant where the waiter asked me if I could eat spicy food or not. Thinking too highly of myself, I shrugged and said Sure, whatever.
He brought the most traditional Jiangxi cuisine to my table, which looked okay at first - nothing too worrying about it. It didnt even feel that spicy when I first tried it. But a few seconds later the spices finally kicked in
OMG....
I had to drink 10 glasses of iced water to calm down!!!
Interestingly enough, and from experience, there are two types of people reading this article: those who (think they) can handle spicy food and cant wait to go eat spicy tonight, and those who dont like to or just cant eat spicy and feel slight numbness just from reading those Weibo comments, because they know how painful it is.
So the question is
Can you eat spicy or not?
What spicy food do you like to eat the most?
