Shenzhen, a city of around 11 million people, is now merely one element of the Pearl River Delta, the worlds largest continuously-urbanized area with a population of more than 60 million people not including all the undocumented migrants nor the inhabitants of its two special administrative regions, Hong Kong (7.5 million) and Macao (580,000).

 

In 1979, Premier Deng Xiaoping named Shenzhen a Special Economic Zone, meaning it would be immune from the strict Communist regime governing the rest of the country and would instead would be permitted to pursue private enterprise.

In the early 1980s, Shenzhen Railway Station gathered water due to typhoon and rain, thereby affecting people's travel. The Shenzhen Railway Station is separated from Hong Kong by a river and is the main channel of the Shenzhen and Hong Kong railways.
