Most expats in Shanghai save more than they ever did at home. Housing, school fees, and flights are often covered, income is higher, and the money builds up.
What most people don't have is a plan for it.
The reason is simple: the planning you had at home stopped working the day you got on the plane. Pension contributions paused. Many banks at home will not open investment accounts for non-residents. And nobody can tell you for certain how long you will stay.
Here are five questions worth answering before the year ends.
1. What replaced your home-country pension?
For most expats, workplace and state pension contributions stopped on arrival. Every year abroad without a replacement is a gap that gets more expensive to close later.
2. If you left China next year, what would happen to your savings?
Money sitting in a local account earns little and takes effort to move. International investments are built to travel with you, to the next posting or back home.
3. Are you saving in the currency you will spend?
Earning in RMB while your future costs are in pounds, dollars, or euros is a risk most people never price in.
4. Who pays for university?
Many packages cover school fees to 18. Almost none cover what comes next, and three or four years of overseas university is one of the largest bills a family will face.
5. When were your existing investments last reviewed?
If you already invest internationally, a second opinion costs nothing. Most international plans are portable, so a review does not mean starting again.
