Did you know that a colossal Changsha Olympic Sports Center is currently under construction? Overlooking the Xiangjiang Muping Bridge, a 900-ton crawler crane slowly lifted more than a hundred tons of steel trusses, rotating and placing them precisely where needed.

From a historical perspective, the National Games have always been a powerful lever for urban development. In 1987, during the 6th National Games in Guangzhou, the Tianhe District leaped from being a suburban area to a CBD, with 23 municipal roads and 5 overpasses built around it.

The 2021 Xi’an National Games transformed the International Port Area from a logistics park into a livable new city. Changsha’s opportunity is even more unique.

In 2029, the National Games will be held in central China for the first time, coinciding with the 80th anniversary of the founding of New China. Thirty years ago, the southern Rongcheng area, where the Changsha Olympic Sports Centre is located, was an inconspicuous 'suburban lowland' of southern Changsha. Today, it is transitioning from the 'geographical core' of the Chang-Zhu-Tan metropolitan area to a 'key functional hub.'

At the heart of this transformation is the Changsha Olympic Sports Centre itself. The arrival of a major project is equivalent to reshaping an entire area. Centered around the Olympic Sports Center, the Olympic New City covers about 24.5 square kilometers, with 43 projects planned for 2026 to 2029.

The new, representative stadium will stand in the southern part of Changsha, on the Xiang River waterfront. The facility will be part of a larger sports complex, which will also include a large sports hall and swimming pool. The stadium is intended to symbolise the “red cradle” – referring to Changsha's  heritage. In turn, the interconnected hall and swimming pool are to resemble a butterfly dancing on the Xiangjiang.

Construction was officially inaugurated on April 27, 2025, with the new complex expected to be ready in December 2028.

In Olympic New City, the senior campus of Changjun Middle School welcomed its first batch of students this autumn; the full structure of the Muping Xiangjiang Bridge has been completed, which will cut the travel time across the Xiangjiang River from 50 minutes to 5–10 minutes once opened; a comprehensive national-level training base—Hunan Sports Training Base—includes 7 training centres, a sports research institute, a sports hospital, and Hunan Sports Vocational College, which can accommodate 8,000 students, is also set to begin construction soon.

'The ‘seven horizontal, six vertical’ road network in Olympic New City has already been planned, including Metro Lines 5 and 9 and medium-to-small metro transit, which will strongly boost the upgrade and expansion of the 'Chang-Zhu-Tan half-hour transport circle.

The focus is on nurturing a '1-2-X' industrial system, led by headquarters and modern service sectors, supported by health and digital intelligence industries, with future industries like quantum technology as growth drivers.

No doubt, this area will become one of the most dynamic and important business and leisure zones, hopefully attracting major sports games to the city, and improve the quality of life that the people of Changsha already enjoy quite well.
