Thinking about a quick getaway? September could be a good time to book.
Following the summer travel peak, fares on several domestic routes from Shanghai have fallen by more than 70%, with the biggest observed drop reaching 79%.
Prices below were checked at 11am on September 4. Airfares change constantly, so use them as a reference only.
One-way fares from RMB 200
Routes to Lijiang, Xishuangbanna, Guilin, Quanzhou, Heihe, Dalian and Shenzhen were among those showing reductions of more than 70%.
Some of the lowest one-way base fares included:
Xiamen, Weihai, Anshun and Jieyang from around RMB 200
Xishuangbanna, Qingdao and Lijiang for less than RMB 300
Yicai also found domestic tickets below RMB 200, including a Shanghai–Guangzhou flight listed at RMB 169. Industry sources said these off-season prices may last only a few weeks.
Remember that the advertised price may not include fuel surcharges, airport fees, checked baggage or seat selection.

Lower fuel surcharges
For mainland domestic tickets issued on or after August 5, fuel surcharges are currently:
RMB 40 per flight segment of 800 kilometres or less
RMB 70 per flight segment of more than 800 kilometres
Infants are exempt. Children and certain eligible passengers pay half the adult rate. International flights follow separate rules.
Clearer refund and change rules are on the way
China’s airline industry is also working on new standards for ticket refunds and changes.
The China Air Transport Association is developing a dedicated industry standard that is expected to be released later in 2026. Under the proposed standard, airlines and ticketing platforms would have to display refund fees, change restrictions and free-refund situations clearly before passengers pay.
The standard is not yet in force, so current policies still vary by airline and fare type.
China Eastern has already relaxed its policy. For eligible domestic tickets sold on or after August 6, passengers can request a voluntary refund or change without a handling fee more than 14 days before departure. Fare differences may still apply.
Before booking
Compare the airline’s official app with at least one travel platform, search both Pudong and Hongqiao airports, and check the final price and refund conditions before paying.
If your dates are flexible, this could be the perfect time for a last-minute trip.
